Celebrating 100 years
1926-2026: A Century as a Community Hub at Dursley's Social Heart
Built for its Community
In 2026, we mark the 100th anniversary of the R.A. Lister Recreation & Social Club (the Club) - now known as the Chantry Centre - a space that has stood at the heart of Dursley’s social life for generations.
Originally founded in 1926 by R.A. Lister & Co, the Club was created to support the wellbeing of its employees through sport, recreation, and social events. R.A. Lister was the main local employer - at its peak employing over 4,000 people in the Dursley area. Interestingly the population of Dursley, at the time, was not much greater and the Club was the social hub of the town.
From hosting weekly bands, dances, dinners, and home to a range of sporting activities, a gardening section and apprenticeships, the Club was more than a building. It was the beating heart of the community.
The fortunes of the company sadly declined from the 1980s. Control of the Club first transferred to its members in 1991 and then in 2011 the assets were donated to a newly formed charity, the Chantry Centre. Whilst the Lister works have now gone, the Chantry Centre continues in Long Steet for the benefit of the local community and remains one of the few links to this important local heritage. Many long-time residents tell of fond memories of their youth spent at the Club. Yet newer residents often do not know the depth of history behind it.
This centenary year is a unique opportunity to reconnect our community with its rich past, celebrate the present, and ensure a vibrant future for the Chantry Centre.
We’re planning a year of engaging activities and events, for the whole community, in partnership with local clubs, groups, and organisations.

Restoration and repair work
We are committed to ensuring the Chantry Centre remains a valuable community hub for decades to come, but further building work is required to ensure a sustainable future.
Our 2026 focus will be on raising funds to replace the well-used wooden sprung floor in the Lister Hall, now over 70 years old!

Our story is Dursley's story. Whether you're a long-time resident or new to the area. Let's celebrate 100 years of community. Together.
